Esther sat stiffly on her old, worn chair. The velvet fabric upon it was torn and fading, and with every movement she made, the chair creaked loudly. It had been hours since the chair had last made a sound. Esther was able to sit motionlessly for as long as she pleased. Does anyone have memories of the World Hockey Association of the 1970's?
I know the talent of the league was considered inferior to the NHL, but the WHA was able to get such standouts like Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. The game was a little more wide open resulting in some higher scoring and introduced a 10 minute overtime period. It also brought professional hockey teams to such cities as Winnipeg, Houston, Indianapolis and Phoenix. With the more wide open style, does anyone think that WHA champions from any season such as the 75 Houston Aeros would have had a chance to beat NHL champions of that year the Philadelphia Flyers in a seven game series?

No, the WHA teams wouldn’t be able to beat an NHL team in a series of games. An All Star game might be different but as we know a successful team is much better than just it’s stars.
The WHA played a wide open exciting style of play but the calibre of play was much lower across the board than the NHL. The goaltenders were old has beens or young never will be’s. So the high scoring may have other roots not linked to the scorers’ prowess.
tomjc43 | Feb 02, 2010

Yes I remember the WHA, and no the 1975 Aeros would not have beaten the 1975 Flyers in a series.
D D | Feb 02, 2010

No, they would not have had the depth IMO…….although the team you mention had all three Howe’s, John Tonelli and Ron Grahame (Jon’s father and the answer to a great Ray Bourque trivia Q) who was concidentally not an "old has been" (25 at the time) nor a "young never will be" as he went 26-6-7 for the Bruins a couple of years later. He was the playoff MVP that year.

………….but come on, nobody could have beaten the 75′ Flyers……….ever….plus they had Bernie Parent in goal! ;)
Bob Loblaw Cinq | Feb 02, 2010

Contrary to Tom and Bob’s assertion, the WHA and NHL played 137 pre-season games between 1972 and 1977, the WHA had a record of 74-45-18. In 1978, the NHL chose not to play anymore exhibition games against the WHA

As for ‘getting’ Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe…..Howe was 44 when he played his first WHA game and had already retired and worked in Detroit’s front office for a year, and Hull was 32 and just coming out of his prime (and Frank Mahovlich, Jacques Plante, et all were also in their late 30s, early 40s).

I’m also not aware of this wide open play that you speak of, for the most part, the WHA was a slower game than the NHL with a lot more clutching and grabbing than the NHL. The 1975-76 season of the WHA was the highest scoring with 3975 goals scored in 562 games, or an average of 7.07 goals/game….that same season the NHL had an average of 6.98 goals/game (a difference of 1.4%).

To answer your final question, in most cases, the best WHA teams would have been swept by the best NHL teams in a winner take all final. The NHL was a top heavy league in the 70s and the best teams were the best teams, middling teams like St. Louis, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles were stuck in a rut below the Bruins, Canadiens, and Flyers….although Ken Dryden did have a losing record in 7 games against WHA competition (2-4-1, 19 goals against). The key thing to remember is that the two leagues NEVER met in a game that meant anything.

In 1972, the average rating given for the WHA around the NHL was a 90 (similar the score given to the Swedish Elite League today), and in the WHA’s last season, the average rating around the NHL was a 65-70 (just slightly higher than the AHL today which currently has a 57 rating), so the league did have quite a drop off in talent from the beginning to the end.

Those of us who were there at the time felt it was more of a pain than it was competition because the league had no rules/morals when it came to player acquisition (it was not uncommon for an agent to bring a WHA contract to an NHL player mid-season). Scouting players became more difficult because the NHL chose to honour agreements it had with the NCAA and CHL while the WHA never had any in the first place.

One key point, in 1972-73, the average salary in the WHA was 1.83x the average salary in the NHL. In 1978-79, minus Gretzky’s salary, the average salary in the WHA was $31,000 (about $100K in 2010 dollars), while the average NHL salary the same year was $56,000 (and a decent scout for the Blackhawks was making a living on $17,700 a year!) or about 0.54x the average NHL salary.
Like I'm Telling You Who I A | Feb 02, 2010

Not just Howe and Bobby Hull — it also got Frank Mahovlich, Dennis Hull (Bobby’s brother and a solid player in his own right), Dave Dryden (Ken’s brother, and also a very good goalie), Gerry Cheevers, Paul Henderson, Rejean Houle, and many other established NHL stars.

And last but not least … don’t forget Wayne Gretzky.

Phil Esposito was even approached by the WHA. He chose to stay loyal to the Boston Bruins. In an interview a year or two ago, Espo said he regrets not going to the WHA — they were offering a lot more money than the Bruins were paying him.

The WHA also was ahead of the NHL in bringing European stars over to North America. It wasn’t too long before the NHL caught on to the idea — nowadays, of course, European players are common in the NHL.

Bud’s mother knows something is troubling her son, but he won’t talk to her about it. All she knows is that Bud doesn’t want to turn out like his father, with holes in his shoes. is my daughter a psychic?
she visions things before it happens like my neice was pregnant and no one in the family knew, but my daughter kept saying to me "mom leannes pregnant, mom i have a funny feeling leanne is pregnant an its going to be a girl with wavy hair" and she is! and when she was younger my dad died (he just randomly woke up dead) and she kept saying to me "mommy mommy, grandpa is going to die tomorrow morning i know it mommy he seems fine now but its going to be unexpected" and i ignored her and then he died and then when she was about 6 anytime before my sister rang she would say "aunts gonna ring you in 2 minutes" and then she rang……….
and she tells me that she would lay in bed the night before and vision things and she says she will vision someone saying something and then next day it would happen!!! and she predicts whats gonna happen the next day and the weather and stuff!!! like before my mom died she was in hospital and we were waiting for a call for 2 days for news on my mom and randomly 12:30pm my daughter sat there playing with her hands starring at the floor and said "mom shes dead and the phone is going to ring now there going to tell you" and the phone rang and the nurse had told me my mom passed away!!!!!! she tells me she trys to keep it from me in case she scares me. like with her turtle also, her turtle was fine and one night she was crying in bed and she said mom nico is going to die and i said don’t be ridiculous his fine, and she kissed him and said i love you im going to miss you and went to bed, 3 hours later she woke up to check and he was dead.

and she is telling me she has a funny feeling that someone in this family is going to have a short life and that were gonna loose money on our house or something and we need to move states soon because something is gonna happen and i’m worried.. cause anytime she says something it happens!

what do you think of this?

Yes, your daughter is psychic.
its really weird, but i say your not the only woman out there that has a child like this. its unnerving, but dont depend on your daughter the whole time. it might be possible that she’ll make a mistake.
look on the bright side, when she grows up she can be a brilliant fortune-teller :]]

psychics are fake. there’s no such thing. it IS pretty miraculous that she’s managed to guess all this, but it’s usually just a strange feeling. i get these strange feelings and every so often i’m right. so no, your daughter is not psychic.

Ancient Greece found death to be inevitable, and therefore he is not represented as purely evil. He is often portrayed as a bearded and winged man, but has also been portrayed as a young boy. Death, or Thanatos is the counterpart of life; death being represented as male, and life as female. He is the twin brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep. He is typically shown with his brother, and is represented as being just and gentle. His job is to escort the deceased to the underworld Hades. He then hands the dead over to Charon (who by some accounts looks like the modern western interpretation of the Grim Reaper, having a skeletal body and black cloak), who mans the boat which carries them over the river Styx, which separates the land of the living from the land of the dead. It was believed that if the ferryman did not receive some sort of payment, the soul would not be delivered to the underworld, and left by the riverside for eternity. Thanatos’ sisters, the Keres were the spirits of violent death. They were associated with deaths from battle, disease, accident, and murder. They were portrayed as evil, often feeding on the blood of the body after the soul had been escorted to Hades. They had fangs, talons, and would be dressed in bloody garments.

If they choose to not look at the truth, it’s their problem. Allah(swt) will deal with them in Doomsday. Seriously, don’t bother with them. Some people have no self-respect – calling another person’s treasured Holy book boring and ‘man-made’. No respect, I tell you.

They listen to what the media tells them – "all muslims are terrorits!" and blah blah blah. I realised that the media is becoming people’s God. If they were all terroists they would’ve all been dead by now.

@DaD, that isn’t in the Qur’an. It’s just man-made gibberish! YOU WEREN’T LIVING WITH THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD(SAW), HOW WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT AGE HE MARRIED!? HAVE SOME RESPECT TO OUR HOLY PROPHET PLEASE! YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HIM!

Yes, but most people don’t look at the quran they look at what some muslims do and what some of us do is unfortunately not very flattering. Most people don’t care about our religion but they care about their safety the extremists are giving them and us muslims really a hard time. Can’t really blame them for how they feel about us. :-(

Edit- Aisha was NOT a child when the prophet married her. Those who claim she was one are talking rubbish.

So when are these Islamic fanatics going to read those parts????????????????
That Damned Heathen | Jan 14, 2010

You forgot the part where Muhammad marries Aisha, a 6 year old, and has sex with her when she is 9.

Apparently islamic terrorists skipped those beautiful verses too….

We believe in Allah but not a child rapist, murder, robber, womaniser to teach us about holiness.
Cephas the rock | Jan 14, 2010

It’s called quote mining. You can do it with any religious text. In fact, you can do it with any text or statement at all.

The hitch is this: people who are hate Islam pick up on Muslim extremists and pick out the really violent, offensive verses of the Quran, and use those to stereotype all of Islam. People do it to Christianity, too and it happens to a lesser extent to other religions.

It would be roughly equivalent to judging the entire gay community on the basis of a few excesses during a gay pride parade. Or stereotyping all atheists based on the excesses of Joseph Stalin. You have people who are wrong and who are out of line in every group.
Upasakha Jason | Jan 14, 2010

Those are very beautiful and I as a Christian have never heard them. It is time to rethink our feelings towards Islam and Moslems in general. I am sure Moslems who truly follow the Quaran and accept all it’s teachings deplore any violence done in the name of that religion. Anger is easy to find, the way of love is the path we all need to be on. Thank you for sharing those lovely passages with me.

sadly both non Muslims and Muslims have skipped these parts.

i also blame ignorance.

EDIT:

"We look at the actions of a group, not what they claim to believe. Talk is cheap, words in a book of mythology, even cheaper"

that’s really silly, so because America has the highest rape rate in the world, that means i will now have to start calling you all rapists, despite what your Constitution and laws say because after all "Talk is cheap, words in a book of mythology, even cheaper"

EDIT:

"mischief" yes it is vague until you read the rest of the quran, lol and the sahih hadith. common guys your minds a little!

It does not actually say anything. Apart from me me me me me, self promotion, me me me me me, self promotion, followed by more me me me me me.

Here is your so called god. El of the Elohim. Plural, chief god out of a pantheon of lesser gods. He had two wives, was the father of Baal, and is 100% pagan in origin. You Muslims have noting to crow about. You have the death penalty for apostasy. Treat your women worse than dogs, and marry babies, full vaginal intercourse is permitted from age 9. Sounds more like legalized pedophilia to me.

Aside from the fact that I don’t see anything beautiful about any of that, isn’t "…spreading mischief in the land…" a bit vague? Seriously, a muslim could easily interpret "mischief" to mean saying anything against the muslim religion, or any aspect of muslim beliefs.

Words are cheap. I watch the actions of muslims, and all too often I do not like what I see.

how do i become a femme fatale/player/man-eater?
im a girl but i wanna be a player..the female kind obviously lol
how do i become one of those girls who is like a guy magnet/femme fatale or whatever theyre called. you know, like a female version of a player. like a maneater
serious answers plz!
x
yeh marla thats what i want! theres a diff between being a slut who gets desperados and being a MM who attracts quality guys

my roomate is a "female player".
Honestly, by the way she dresses sometimes she could be mistaken for a prsotitute. All she needs is her own corner. She brings different guys over or I will hear her straightening her hair at midnight EVERY NIGHT, leave at 1am, sometimes come back at 3am with a random(?) guy (question mark because Im usually asleep at that time, but they sound like different voices!) and he will leave by 4.
My other roommate and I are completely annoyed with her behavior.
SAdly there are double standards for men and women regarding promiscuity. For guys its ok, for girls its not. Im a female, but I still cant help considering girls sluts when they behave like my roomate. But I also consider promiscuity in general (from MEN and WOMEN) as not a good thing. but thats just me.
I guess my point is, if you want to follow my roommates steps then you need to be aware that you might be seen in a different light.

I think the best way is to attract the RIGHT type of guy is when u feel confident in yourself. I dont think its particularly necessary to attract men only by wearing a short skirt. If you put some effort into your physical appearance and LOTS of effort into your self-esteem you will be a guy magnet-the right kind of guy-magnet.
good luck!

Honestly? Don’t. You could wear short clothes, plaster your face with make-up, flirt with any guy you see and treat them like dirt, but you’ll regret it. If you think it’ll get you respected, it won’t. If you act like a slut, you’ll get treated like a slut. There’s nothing wrong with having fun, but you know you’ve gone too far when you everyone is calling you a whore and no one wants to be your friend anymore.

You can be gorgeous and glamorous and have boys idolising you without wearing a skirt so short it looks like a belt. Respect yourself and your appearance and other people will respect you too, and you can still have fun! :)

Well these are in fact personality traits often based on experience earlier and throughout life-so you kind of are like that to a small to large extent based on Histrionics.
Of course one can "act" like that, but if it isn’t a true to a persons persona it can’t be maintained.

Do I have a brain tumor? Pressure in head and liquid feeling, lots of symptoms?
"I’m an eighteen year old natural bodybuilder, young and in shape, with a good medical history, no allergies, medication ect.

I will preface this by saying that for almost a year I have been seeing a white bead of light moving generally from down to up over four seconds in my peripheral vision. I went to several specialists on this and nothing is wrong with my eyes that was notable to them, they seemed very unconcerned. Around four years ago I had very severe migraines and ultimately went on the god awful midren for a short time before deciding that it was worse than enduring them. I also have a slight bump in my skull which I have been told is fairly normal, though on occasion I get a slight headache emanating from it, though nothing drastic at all.

Despite getting anxious maybe once or twice over this it’s been fairly minor and not a big deal… However the other night I was driving my friend home, and mid sentence suddenly I felt the weirdest feeling, a liquidy flowing feeling connected both my ears to this spot on my head( I cannot remember if it felt like it was flowing down or up as I was taken by surprise). I then got what I could best say felt like a head rush though that may have been because of adrenaline from the surprise, and what I can best describe as pressure on the top of my head(not on the bump, but a little further to the left dead in the middle at the very top of my skull.).

I felt it very intensely until I finally fell asleep and have felt it all of today, albeit to a seemingly lesser degree. The liquid feeling has not recurred. I am trying to be calm( I feel a little thirsty despite being drinking frequently, though perhaps it’s just from worrying a bit).

I am mainly concerned if this sounds like something that could be doing permanent damage, needs to be checked out ect. I know the brain can’t feel things itself as it has no nerves, so I don’t know what the liquid feeling was. I am very familiar with how anxiety affects things, but this has been a post without any anxiety inspire comments. It’s probably important to note the pressure does not hurt at all, it’s just an awkward pressure, and at the worst is distracting and makes falling asleep difficult.

Please let me know any opinions on the matter and thank you VERY much."

The previous is a copy and paste of something I posted a few days ago on a less active and unhelpful forum. Since writing that, I still have not felt the liquid feeling again. As always the light in my right eye has appeared, and the pressure(which started a week ago) has persisted, though it is less function impairing and I have slept, albeit not ideal. The pressure is not as overpowering as in the first two days, though it certainly is still there and some moments worse than others. My ears for a lack of a better word, feel congested a bit, which they only have since the pressure started. My body feels weaker, especially my legs though it could be from recovering from my workouts, just not doing so very well due to the lack of sleep the pressure has caused.

Recently, I have been even more concerned about the possibility of a brain tumor, I found a thread on here with many people with the same symptoms that didn’t have a tumor even after investigation with CT scans and MRI’s which eased me a bit. But the fact I have fatigue, weak legs, a pressure in my head, vision issues, ringing in ears(have for years though)and used to have headaches is worrisome. My main question here is:

Based on my age(18), the fact I had the severe headaches 5 or so years ago and no longer do, have had the light in my right eye for a year, have had my eyes examined and nothing mentioned that would have been a red flag for tumor, a bump on my head with nearby pressure, no nasuea at all, only having thrown up three times in the past five years, the fact I DO have twitches, VERY minor convulsions in the neck ect. and have for awhile, have had depression but not for the past three years or so, and don’t have mood swings or irrational behaviour, just how likely is it I have a brain tumor?

No search has really provided anything concrete, as nothing tellms me how severe or persistent these symptoms are, I have a lot of symptoms but nothing really particularlly intense, is the pressure supposed to be mind blowing? Would I be nearly deaf as opposed to slight ringing? having persistent headaches and vomiting as opposed to not at all? Be unable to walk rather than have some fatigue and slight balance issues? Seizuring like my minor twitches or full blown loss of consciousness? Incredible depression accompanied by lack of logic as opposed to year old depression and currently sound decision making?

I really don’t know, I am having some bizzare symptoms that match a tumor but I can’t tell if they match up, please help!
